Prescription Drug Misuse Epidemic: How Indiana’s healthcare and life sciences industries are responding and developing solutions
Please plan to attend BioCrossroads’ first Frameworx session of the year on Thursday, February 18, from 8:00-10 a.m. at D’Amore in Indianapolis – Prescription Drug Misuse Epidemic: How Indiana’s healthcare and life sciences industries are responding and developing solutions.
Prescription drug misuse and abuse are making headlines daily in Indiana and across the country. In 2012 drug overdose was the leading cause of injury death in the U.S. According to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA), extended-release and long-acting opioids are extensively misprescribed, misused and abused leading to costly risks such as overdose, addiction and even death. As a result, the FDA developed the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy requiring manufacturers and healthcare providers to verify the benefits of pain management continue to outweigh the potential risk associated with abuse and misuse.
In this session, Dr. Joan M. Duwve, Chief Medical Officer for the Indiana State Department of Health, will deliver a keynote addressing the current state of the epidemic and key factors that will lead to viable solutions in the future including the important role electronic health records play in collecting and monitoring useful data. Following her keynote, Dr. Duwve will join a panel discussion with industry experts who are on the front lines of educating the public, providing care for patients, and collecting important data used to track the epidemic and offer possible solutions for the future. Panelists include:
• R. Scott LaNeve, Vice President, Health System & Network Programs, AIT Laboratories
• Kimberly Sharp, Director of Pain Management, Community Health Network
• Moderator: R. Matthew Neff, President & CEO, AIT Laboratories
